So we can only assume that when she was told that the Florida Supreme Court had just abolished capital punishment in the state, she wasn’t fazed in the slightest. Indeed, in a year when we’ve all been shocked at the death of one innocent man and, more disturbingly, at how little that fate seems to bother some of our most intelligent and powerful people, Chapman offered a wise and sober reminder that this is not the first time the state has been called to account for abusing the power of the ultimate sanction.
“We were doing these things for 30 years after the great civil rights movement,” says the Arlington resident, owner of Thelma’s Bookstore in Old Town Alexandria. “It doesn’t take much to give us pause.”
After all, there are still numerous cases in this country in which the death penalty remains the only sentence available for a heinous crime. And while sentencing has become much more politically charged over the past few years — we’re talking about the liberal incumbent President, for starters — our laws, culture and attitudes have remained largely unchanged.
“But people have become very aware that the death penalty is not a perfect system,” Chapman adds. “People have been on the jury and they want to know, is the man right? So they’ll look at something and a juror will see something they see and say, ‘That’s why I didn’t agree with the whole thing.’”
Chapman herself dealt with that question as a juror when she served in Tallahassee, where she watched a man charged with murdering two people go free even though three independent witnesses confirmed that he was guilty. “They had the ultimate evidence. The district attorney had the ultimate evidence and they sent it all away for something else,” she says. “We’d say in the 10 years I was on the jury that we’d heard numerous
