about an hour a week of x-plane flying is probably sufficient to keep a beginner flying and happy. however, a pilot can spend more time flying if desired. today, most flight simulators available in the market have a large display attached to the simulator display, as well as have a full set of flight controls that the pilot can use to fly an aircraft. a conventional cockpit is still available in x-plane, but what is different is that the present virtual cockpit displays are displayed on the simulators display screen via a webcam, and are then optionally transmitted to a dedicated control display for the user to pilot and watch. this has the advantage of typically costing the same or less than a conventional cockpit, but has the advantage of giving the user more accurate feedback on the piloting controls, as well as having some special tools and features made possible by the control display. thus, for example, there is no need for a flight instructor to be present to provide coaching on flying the airplane, as all the coaching can be provided via x-plane and the control display.
if you decide to put x-plane in a server on the internet and use a control display, all your planes, if they are networkable (have a valid x-plane account), can be shared on the server and controlled from a single control display.
many people use obstacles as a way of making their airplanes crash, so that flying to the rescue becomes an exciting part of the flight. this can be achieved by creating hidden objects in the environment with elevation set to a very low value, and surface set to a very high value. though by doing so you may have to fine-tune the planes flight behavior to match such obstacles in order to catch it.
once you have access, you can search for xplane to see what its scenery collection is like. in the left panel of the profile editor youll see a list of categories that represent the scenery on your computer. click the my scenery button to see what xplane has downloaded on your computer. choose the detailed tab to see a detailed list of all the aircraft, terrain and other scenery in your collection.
for now, let’s just select xplane and click the download button. depending on your internet connection you may get a small window to select what you want to download, or you may get a large preview window with everything you need to get started. the download will start immediately. when it’s finished, you can pause, resume, or cancel it.
next, turn on wifi mode (if you have an iphone or ipod, you must run xplane with a rooted phone to run on an iphone or ipod). turn on ioplanes airplane mode, and ensure that the ioplanes airplane mode is set to bluetooth or phone mode. connect your ioplanes iphone or ipod to your computer with a lightning to usb cable. when your iphone or ipod is connected to your computer, ioplanes will show you the airplanes in the event list.
let me say from the beginning that this only works for x-plane 11. if you are using x-plane 10, then this is not going to work for you. if you are using an older version of x-plane 10, you should upgrade to x-plane 11 as soon as you can, as all of the older programs will no longer be supported.
once installed, the program will generate a configuration file called xuser.cfg. if there is not an xuser.cfg file in the root x-plane folder, go to the folder where xplane is installed and create one. then, look in the config folder for a file called load_misc_into_flight. it will have one line in it, for x-plane 10 only, containing a number of configuration settings. you can edit that file (in case the number is wrong, there should be a version of xuser.cfg in each folder, with a different number), and the program should run and work fine.
