the old guard is also a truly compassionate movie. while it doesnt go into much depth about the realities of aging, it does show us that love is an essential ingredient to everyone s experience. the first time we meet riley s parents, she is an adorable, gawky, nervous teenager who is planning to run away from home and live in a cabin in the woods. as riley travels away from the suburbs to a rural part of new mexico, it becomes clear that shes growing up more quickly than her family, and her parents arent there to help her out. they arent even there to tell her that theyre proud of her. theres a scene where they tell riley that theyre proud of her and she responds, i know, because i made you proud. this simple line shows the duality of the mays love. on the one hand, they clearly love riley and are proud of her because shes an independent and kind-hearted girl who is willing to do things like play sports, attend school, and live in the woods. on the other hand, they love riley because she makes them proud.
the movie also has a great deal of heart. the romance between riley and nick is the romance of the underdog. while nick is super-intelligent and riley is a straight-a student, he is a little dim and she is a little awkward. they have a connection and they find common ground, which leads them to the conclusion that they love each other. the romance, however, is not just a romantic story. its really about friendship. riley and nick have a number of experiences together that make them both better people and its the friendship that makes them fall in love.
a great example of this comes at the film’s end, when rileys father, played by billy crystal, asks her to close her eyes and imagine what she would want her life to look like. she describes a life with a family that loves and cares for one another, and that includes riley. when the camera comes into focus, we see that the actors involved are all crying, and we begin to understand that rileys life is full of love and joy, not sadness and despair.
