The Lake Area man who was busted for allegedly sexually assaulting and kidnapping an 11-year-old girl in 2015 was sentenced to nearly 20 years behind bars on Friday.
Seth C.Hoff, 32, was found guilty of attempted criminal sexual assault and third-degree kidnapping last August.
In 2018, a jury in the Summit County Common Pleas Court found Hoff guilty of more charges after a trial in which he was accused of kidnapping the girl in May 2015.
The girl reported the incident to police.
According to court documents, Hoff took the girl to his parents’ home in Chardon, where he told police he had sexually assaulted her.
A subsequent search of Hoff’s phone revealed he had sent naked photos of himself to the girl and threatened to kill her if she told anyone, police said.
When interviewed by police, Hoff initially denied making any contact with the girl and accused the teen of lying.
However, after a couple weeks, he admitted to the sexual assault and kidnapping allegations, according to the police report.
On Friday, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison on the attempted rape and 10 years for the kidnapping charge to be served consecutively.
“It’s a shame what happened, but I’m glad justice was served and I’m glad I can go to prison,” Hoff said in an interview. “I’m just sorry for the little girl.”
Hoff maintains his innocence.
In a sentencing memorandum, Hoff’s attorney, Donald Rice, wrote that he has done “a lot of self-examination” since he started representing Hoff.
“The defendant made a bad choice in committing a terrible crime,” Rice wrote. “He’s lucky the outcome of that crime was not a homicide.”
A former Cleveland police officer-turned-private eye is under investigation for planting evidence and mishandling evidence in his own case, according to documents obtained by Cleveland.com and other outlets.
In a complaint for a pre-indictment felony review, the State of Ohio has accused Victor G. Michael of not properly handling evidence collected from a woman he was accused of raping in October 2012.
The complaint, filed in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court on Monday, lists six cases where police have sent the alleged serial rapist DNA kits to the crime lab.
