One friend of mine, who is a dermatologist and has been happily married for 29 years, said to me once “You have a great husband, but what he doesn’t understand about sex is that everyone wants good sex and the whole time he’s having great sex with you. But the rest of the time? It’s terrible.” That’s not how he wanted to express it, but her point is very clear: We all want good sex most of the time. For her, good sex with her husband included happy mornings, clean windows, and their dogs’ toes.
Many couples — especially long-term committed couples, like her and her husband — are sexual in some way. But others are simply dry and unfulfilled. She might love getting laid and keeping her husband happy, but she has very little desire to have sex with someone else. She has never been in the thrall of a man like that. Still, she says she has tremendous respect for her husband’s desire to have sex with her most of the time, and she can’t imagine being with someone else the way he is. Does that make her a bad person? Is this just one of those choices where “it depends”?
