Solos (2013) is a puzzle platformer starring the big ball of dynamite himself. Solos is a brilliantly inventive puzzle platformer that takes the procedural generation of Spelunky and updates it with a science fiction twist. Solos combines the best elements of the adventure platformer with the precision platforming of Spelunky to give a fresh twist to the genre. You play a bomb (or bombs) in a Science-Fiction underworld. Some of my first friends were 2D platformers. Super Mario Brothers, Spelunky, Pikmin, Castlevania, Metroid, Sonic, Mega Man, Super Smash Bros, Castlevania, and Zelda to name a few. I began to gather my group of friends on a plane ride to visit my grandmother as a child. However, I fell in love with them. They were my life. And the same was true when we started learning how to build games. Those platformers seemed like the pinnacle of games. They are still some of my favorite games, even to this day. I wanted to make games that I could play in the same way.
However, as I entered the college of design and architecture, I felt the disconnect from traditional games and my friends. I remember the first time I played a 2D platformer, I was just lost. I found myself running towards the screen thinking “where am I supposed to go? What am I supposed to do?” I could not understand what I was doing wrong. I questioned why I even cared about playing games. This is when my college professor mentioned Mario.
He said Mario was a game that every programmer could understand. I asked him how he knew that, and he simply replied,

The stars are shining and the dance floors are packed. Oh, and if you die, there’s always this, oh, I don’t know, 15-minute intermission where you regenerate health and replenish ammo. That can really add up.
A fun game that looks gorgeous. It’s got a weird time travel plotline with a cameo by a grumpy Elvis – but it somehow manages to remain charming throughout.
The controls are pretty unusual as well. Your bat is basically a car that’s just sitting at the bottom of the screen, but when you jump, it somehow moves up and down in tandem with you. It’s pretty obvious when you’re supposed to jump, but when you fall or have to climb up or something, your bat moves at different speeds. The other controls are mouse based. The move left and right is forward or backward on the bat, while the left click is the use of some sort of gun.
The plot is pretty fun. You’re some kid from a place called the Belt (where the cowman is king), and a time loop has been activated where everything is the same but every night you change into some crazy super outfit. Basically, a golden haired Mary Sue does a bunch of grandstanding to amuse herself and she brings some bandit king who used to work for the cowman to justice.
Really, the only bad point is the cast of characters. There are a lot of people with no names or personalities, and they’re thrown into the action completely out of left field with not enough introduction to them to make you care. It’s like if you were playing an episode of a television show and suddenly someone in your party showed up wearing a blue hat and apron and you had no idea who it was.
Aye, got a bit of a hard time from the TGS crowd, which is understandable considering the gaudy presentation and hard to grasp overworld, but in retrospect I’m really glad I put it down and didn’t play it for a few weeks.
Getting a wide variety of extra content for a remake of a 20 year old game that was never a hot seller in the first place is a pretty good thing, and some people might be a little too hasty about how well the content is put together.

Intrigued by the early reviews and word of mouth for Mystery Case Files: The Countess Collector’s Edition, I added it to my Steam wishlist, hoping to snag a discounted copy at some point as I am a fan of all of the Myst-style adventures. With publication day quickly approaching, I figured that I’d pre-order so I could get some protections on my game before it shipped. Funnily enough, the full version of The Countess Collector’s Edition quickly sold out on Steam too.
The game will be coming out on Steam on November 27, 2012 for both PC and Mac. The game is an official legacy title developed by Heart Machine, design team led by Craig Shaw.
