What do you do when you’re a Japanophile looking to take your gaming collection to the next level? Well, then, put on one of your favorite Japanese karate films, get a karate-styled haircut, and just go for it, that’s what!

Karateka is your basic fighting game. You punch, kick, and swing your opponent around like some kind of rickety little leaf-blower. The game centers around a trio of karateka: a new guy, a group of experienced fighters, and a wily old pro. The “New Kid,” the “Young Turks,” and “Mister Expert” are nicknames that pop up in the game often, and they’re not really meant to be seen as anything more than things that these players are.

The game is broken up into stages. The current stage you’re playing has you assuming the role of one of these players. But you’ll be playing against a generic enemy in most stages. It’s when you move on to the next stage that you’ll be fighting against actual opponents as opponents, complete with hitboxes, specials, and powerful moves. This is where you really get to show off your character’s strengths.

A lot of the enemy types here come in several variations with differing attacks and special attacks. Some of them are slow and easy to hit, like the big guy with the tree trunk. Others are fast and agile, like the ninja in the top image. The trick is to learn how to work with the style of the opponent you’re facing. If the opponent is fast and tricky, it might be better to move in close and then use a quick attack to knock them out with a punch. If they’re slow and predictable, you’ll want to keep your distance, so they’re not able to hit you with the inevitable special move that comes with their attack.

When you first start out in a stage, there aren’t any clues as to what kind of moves you’re going to need to learn in order to win. In order to get to the next stage, you’ll need to defeat a certain number of opponents in your current stage.
