First mentioned in an Autodesk patent filing in 1972, the original concept of CAD stemmed from a National Physical Laboratory (NPL) study that formed the basis of the idea. In the 1970s, a group of computer scientists and engineers at the NPL recognized the limitations of their existing CAD systems and began investigating the potential of using computers to automate the design process. They proposed a digital model of the physical world in which the shape and dimensions of physical objects could be defined by computer commands. The idea was to replace the traditional layout of a physical drawing with a file of geometric information.

According to Autodesk, the NPL CAD system consisted of three main components: the CAD model, the drawing set, and the drawing management system. The CAD model consisted of an unprocessed collection of geometric objects stored as a file in a CAD database. A geometric object in the CAD database is referred to as a node. An object in the drawing set is referred to as a drawing. Each drawing was stored in a drawing set file in a drawing management system (DMS). The DMS stored the geometric data of the CAD model and instructions for converting it into a physical drawing for printing or display on a drawing monitor. The CAD model in the drawing set was a conceptual representation of the objects of the physical world. The drawing set contained the instructions and the objects. The drawing management system controlled how the information was incorporated into the physical world.

The ideas of the CAD team were incorporated into the CAD programs that eventually became available to the general public in 1981. Autodesk marketed their first CAD application as Caravelle, a desktop app running on a microcomputer with an internal graphics controller. Caravelle came on the market before Autodesk was able to build a commercially viable CAD server for remote access to CAD models over the public network, so users had to install and run the desktop version on their own computer. Caravelle was available only in a hardware bundle with the low-end Xerox XCEL. In addition to CAD modeling, the Xerox XCEL included model animation and modeling of mechanical systems. The bundled version of Caravelle cost about $16,000.

Import and export of AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, DWG, and DXF files into and out of AutoCAD.
Search for files in the ActiveX database.
Create, open, and edit files.
Schedule a file for editing.
Print.

ObjectARX (or ObjectARX 3) is an object-oriented programming library, developed by Autodesk to make AutoCAD extensible. ObjectARX is used to integrate a variety of objects into AutoCAD, including project management objects, cross-platform objects, and AutoCAD-aware modules. ObjectARX enables AutoCAD to communicate with external software and hardware devices through a standard API, which can also be used for creation of custom functionality.
