AutoCAD was first released in December 1982 as a desktop app running on microcomputers with internal graphics controllers, or single board computers (SBCs), such as the Commodore Plus/4.[3] Before AutoCAD was introduced, most commercial CAD programs ran on mainframe computers or minicomputers, with each CAD operator (user) working at a separate graphics terminal.
Unlike the object-oriented CAD programs that followed it, AutoCAD was designed to be more directly connected to the graphic controller in the computer. Users would use a mouse or a tablet to place points, and then move the cursor around the screen, to connect and join the objects together. This was called “inked” or “painting” a drawing, and was new to the industry. This “inking” style of CAD became AutoCAD’s hallmark and was eventually adopted by other software developers.
Two design philosophies helped shape AutoCAD’s early development. First, the intention of the design was to be intuitive, as the early versions of AutoCAD were used primarily by hobbyists who were not necessarily CAD engineers or architects. As such, the interface used more of a point-and-click style of operation, similar to creating a movie from video cassette recordings (VCRs), than the CAD programs used in the 1980s and early 1990s. There were more tools for manipulating objects in their final form than for manipulating them as they were drawn, which made it easier for beginners to do what they wanted. Second, the interface was designed to use the least number of controls and menu options possible, so it would not slow down when used by multiple users on computers with limited memory.
