“Playing History: Slave Trade”, is an interactive game based on real events and events as they unfolded in history. It narrates the horrors of the trans-Atlantic slave trade in the 18th century on the seafaring ship ‘The Fugitive’, that continuously carried around 1.4 million African children into servitude. We use this game to emphasize the importance of our past and confront the horrors of our present. The point of the game is to gain knowledge about history, both through questioning historical events and the people involved in the events and through a bit of light humour. In addition we use the immersive experience and gaming of “Slave Tetris” to bring the game to life. The game has been developed in cooperation with the Flemish Historical Institute, the Flemish government and Flemish Educational Institute. The video player attached to the game is an optional component. This player allows you to jump to moments in the video. It is used when, in the game, you have to ask for help from someone in the video to gain knowledge.
