Both police and the FBI responded to the incident at the Cascade Mall in Burlington, Washington, and declared the incident over early on Friday.
The shooting happened at the Macy’s at the mall shortly after 1 p.m. PT (4 p.m. ET) and officials say there is no immediate threat to the public.
The Mercer Island, Washington, police said they were alerted by a woman who called 911, saying she heard gunshots and someone run past her screaming.
Authorities said there were reports of multiple victims.
Paramedics took the victims to nearby Seattle-area hospitals.
“They don’t know who it was. They don’t know what the motive was, and they don’t know if there are any other suspects,” U.S. Rep. Derek Kilmer told KOMO 4. “We’ve had a lot of damage and a lot of police.”
Local media outlets said the gunman was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the scene. He had a 9 mm handgun, officials said.
Macy’s said employees reported seeing a person running in the Macy’s with a firearm and urged others to take cover.
Three people were taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds, according to the local Kittitas Valley Medical Center. One person was seriously hurt and another was treated at the mall for a minor injury, according to authorities.
A spokeswoman for PeaceHealth Saint Joseph Medical Center in nearby Hood River, Oregon, said one person had been admitted to the hospital.
Sandra Brown, a 74-year-old retired Seattle woman who was shopping at Macy’s with her daughter, said the shooting started near a pair of escalators at the back of the store.

“I ducked back into the clothing area and she ducked into a dressing room and we just stayed together,” Brown told KIRO.
She said she saw a “gaping hole” in the dressing room door and heard two to three shots.
She said she and her daughter then heard police shouting.
