Thursday, March 08, 2011 Darazistan – A Geopolitical Study Darazistan, the country’s 62nd province, is often described as the natural strategic gateway to both the two neighbouring giant countries, India and Pakistan, as well as central Asia (Russia, Afghanistan and Iran). Regardless of the benefits there are in sharing the country’s energy and resources with the international community, most of the present political community, particularly the President of Pakistan, tends to wish that a sudden end to the conflict in Afghanistan and a calm security in Pakistan will solve the Darazistan problem. Unluckily, these wishes are not falling on deaf ears. Pakistan is ready to support and finance a militant Afghan group to take over power in Kabul. Today, the Darazistan question is again up for debate. Once again the “buffer zone”, which turned into a settlement area in the mid-nineties, is alive with insurgent activity, supported by Pakistan. Although the Darazistan insurgency has been in existence for over two decades, full-scale war broke out in 2004 due to the increasing number of suicide attacks in Pakistani cities. Casualties in the war increased to over 13,000, and over 100,000 are living in the camps. Furthermore, the Taliban insurgency started to grow in strength and grew even more when, after the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in the spring of 2001 and the destruction of the Taliban regime, the new Afghan administration started the process of reconciliation. Since then, a number of peace agreements have been signed but they have been either rejected or boycotted by the Taliban. Bangladesh is a very important natural border for Darazistan. The southern province of Balochistan is the largest province in Pakistan, stretching 1,400 km from west to east and 400 km from north to south. Its population is estimated to be 27 million (2010). Politically, it is a hotbed of Pakistan, especially in Balochistan. The province is a very traditional area where the traditional tribal culture dominates. According to the census of 1961, some 26% of the population of Balochistan was non-Muslim and the table below shows the distribution of ethnic groups in the province.
