History
AutoCAD is the product of a team of developers that grew from approximately 12 employees in the beginning in 1982 to over a thousand today. Several branches of the company, such as Autodesk, Inc. and the AutoCAD group, have contributed to the development of the product, along with developers of other commercial CAD software programs. The first version of AutoCAD was created by Ken Dayhoff as a standalone graphics program for the Macintosh, using standard graphic technology.
Autodesk started its AutoCAD business in 1982, when Autodesk, Inc. hired Steve Reiss to create a new vector graphics program. Reiss had worked at Xerox PARC, where he developed the first computer-aided design program. At Autodesk, Reiss helped develop AutoCAD, which has become the primary computer-aided design program for engineers and architects. One of the major features in the early versions was the ability to draw line segments connected to control points, a feature that is found in all modern CAD programs.
When the Macintosh version of AutoCAD was ready, the company decided to license it to other manufacturers. In 1988, the first version of AutoCAD was released to the public, and it was a desktop program for the Macintosh. The version that would become AutoCAD was called TypeDraw, a proprietary vector graphics program.
By 1996, there were six different versions of the AutoCAD product line. These included AutoCAD for Windows, a commercial product that included features that made it usable for architectural drafting, and Architectural Desktop, which was a separate architecture product. In 1997, the company combined the two into Autodesk Architectural Desktop.
In 1998, the first two versions of Autodesk Inventor were released. Inventor was AutoCAD’s equivalent to the new Autocad LT, a cross-platform version of the product that was aimed at the home and hobbyist market.

Feature update
Autodesk announced release of AutoCAD 2012 on March 7, 2010 at AutoCAD World 2010 in Las Vegas. An update to AutoCAD was released on January 10, 2011 and AutoCAD 2011 SP1 on January 15, 2011. The goal of this new version is to enhance model-driven drawing, 3D modeling, drafting and presenting features and the ability to import and export drawings to and from other file formats. These new features were released without charge to all users of AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, AutoCAD R14, AutoCAD Architecture, AutoCAD Electrical, AutoCAD Plant, AutoCAD Mechanical and AutoCAD Landscape.
