Their purpose, as expressed in the opening paragraph, is not simply to list the names of the various literary figures who have written about the significance of Jesus’ birth, but to trace the history of exegesis and interpretation of this much-discussed event. This was the tradition of St. Jerome’s later Latin commentaries (and St. Augustine’s near contemporary), and their influence can still be seen in St. Bonaventure’s commentary, or in the French school of textual interpretation, led by Hugh of St. Victor, which influenced the Reformation school. The author also interprets the influence of earlier Latin exegesis on the respective humanist reformers, Erasmus and Luther.

Part II (Chapters 8 to 12) concerns the Latin Synoptic gospels and the relationship between John’s Gospel and these. He seeks to ascertain, after the Renaissance, the development of the early Latin Gospel tradition and the influence of this on Latin scholarship and biblical interpretation, not least by the Franciscan succession of St. Bonaventure and St. Thomas Aquinas. This was part of a developing continuity in the reception and interpretation of the Latin Synoptic Gospels from the late Middle Ages until the Reformation and beyond. Part III (Chapters 13 to 17) then deals with the view of the meaning of the Catholic Church’s reading of the Synoptic gospels, especially as expressed by St. Paul of the Cross. Finally, the author looks at Reformed interpretation of the Synoptic gospels, notably the influence of the KJV Douay-Rheims on exegesis and apologetics.
