If government spending is pushed too far, it will have to pay the consequences. Federal government spending is already dangerously high, growing from $1.1 trillion in 2001 to $1.3 trillion today. That’s nearly 18 percent of the national economy. That’s a little over twice the size of the entire U.S. economy at the end of World War II. And now it’s getting ready to balloon even more. The government is in danger of running out of room. Spending is growing at a staggering rate, as shown in the table at the end of this story. Growth in federal spending is far outpacing growth in federal income, as federal revenues plummet as a percentage of GDP. Indeed, federal spending is growing twice as fast as federal taxes. Federal revenue fell from 28.8 percent of GDP in 2001 to 24.9 percent of GDP in 2005, according to the Congressional Budget Office. And federal spending grew from 23.8 percent of GDP to 27 percent of GDP over the same period. Revenues are down because businesses and individuals are feeling the pinch of the high tax rates and tight federal budgets. They’re laying off workers, reducing their use of government services and borrowing money to invest, which reduces their tax receipts. Tax revenues are down because demand for goods and services is down, as the housing and credit crisis plays out. Less demand for products reduces tax receipts. So, a population still at the peak of its earning capacity is fed up with the federal government’s budget deficit and spending. At the same time, the federal government, which now spends more than it takes in, can no longer afford its share of federal entitlement programs (or could it, perhaps?). All of this is hurting our economy. Other countries, which are more fiscally responsible than the U.S., are investing their savings in their own currency and making sure c6a93da74d
