When a game of The Lord of the Rings breaks even, it’s almost always a game of really high skill. This was pretty much the case back in 2002 when the first version of RotWK came out. It’s largely the same still. The only difference is that, back then, the game was well designed enough that the higher the skill level of the players, the more evenly matched their matches were. As the years went by, the game became dominated by players with higher skill levels, to the point where high-skilled players were getting crushed by players in lower skill levels at every step. The game still has this problem, but it’s now far less pronounced. There are still higher-skill players who can beat lower-skill players at every step, but the difference is more a matter of how skilled the higher-skill players are rather than how high-skilled the lower-skill players are.

Mechanically, the Rise of the Witch-King expansion is a total bore. If you’ve played it even a little bit in 2.01, you know this. If you’ve played it in 2.02, you know this as well. It’s ultimately the problem with every expansion pack for RotWK. You want to know how your favorite hero or unit will look with these improvements. If you haven’t played it in 2.01, you’re going to have a hard time knowing what you’re missing from the short list of improvements. You’re going to have to learn to use both versions of the game in order to really maximize your strategy. This sucks, and they could’ve done a much better job at making the game more dynamic and user friendly.

The Rise of the Witch-King is good, but it has a very long list of improvements. However, it’s only one item in a much larger list of improvements. The game is better in many other ways. The game is much more intuitive, much less tedious, much less of a time sink, and much more dynamic than it was in 2002. The many changes to strategy and tactics are, more often than not, made with an eye toward making the game more fun and fair to play (aside from nerfs being few and far between). The changes to the game are what makes it better. Not the Rise of the Witch-King.

QUICKSAND (a melee unit that attacks with every attack of the hero or only once every 1.5 seconds has been added) now uses the same amount of time to build as the rest of the army (1.5 seconds) and gives +5% damage. Because it uses the same amount of time to build as the rest of the army it doesnt have to be constantly checking the timer or back out of it. It will use the same amount of time (1.5 seconds) for every attack it makes, so it doesnt try to break anything after a few attacks then starts going back out (before it can finish attacking). It might be a bit overpowered, but its designed to use as a support. Any time you want him to attack while in your army it will use the correct amount of time for his army to attack too. If he was a ranged unit he would be terrible in melee though. He is still crafted and gets charged, so he must be used alone or with allied units that support him. QuickSand is nessacary to any hero deck in any form of melee because in melee you would want every attack count. The other option for him is to build it from a trunk, but the HP investment for the Hero Trunk is too much for it to be worth in terms of damage.
Gimbel – Another Orc hero who seems like he would be some kind of mana king, although this is hard to determine. Firstly it should be noted that his attack is magical and costs no AP, so it is quite slow. His damage is however very high, and he can easily wipe out units when you have him in the first batch. He even has a range attack that deals low damage to tanks.
Many 2.01 leaders have already written us requesting a 2.01 multiplayer patch. We know that it would be a simple and quick fix, and we have also promised them that this will be our top priority in the near future. We also know that most of them didn’t play the PC version of RotWK in 2.01, so we are working on a version of the game for PC that will be fairly similar to the Mac version, except that it will be more compatible with PC’s, such as having a higher resolution. It will be ready for release as soon as we can work on it. Meanwhile, we have also got plenty of new subscribers to the game, and we hope that a fresh influx of players will help us get the 2.02 multiplayer patch done sooner, and the 2.01 multiplayer patch for the PC done.
