So far, the diffusion of texts in non-European languages, which have been essential in creating transoceanic links for centuries, have hardly been adequately considered in studies on the Indian Ocean. This article focuses on the appropriation of Arabic historiographic text into the precolonial Swahili poetic genre of the utendi. Der vorliegende Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit dem Vorkommen der Erzhlungen aus Tausendundeiner Nacht in Ostafrika. Er bietet einen berblick der verfgbaren Angaben, die sich auf die Swahili-sprachigen Regionen von Kenia und Tansania beziehen. The Swahili variant has been presented in two versions that were recorded in two Swahili communities: one in western Kenya in 1884 and the second from 1987 to 1989 in coastal Tanzania. These data are supplemented by information from the German-Swahili online version from 1995 that represents the proto-dialect of Indian Ocean Swahili (IOZ) as spoken today in Dar es Salaam. In the latter community the Swahili version is used for the local dialect which is used for many purposes. The Swahili has proved to be a flexible, relatively accessible but not universally intelligible variant and has contributed to regional cultural continuity and cross-fertilization. The present article will have an impact on future research on Swahili culture as an Indian Ocean variant. 5ec8ef588b
