Antigone (Hackett Classics) Book Pdf

the athenian tragedy antigone by sophocles is translated into english by peter woodruff. the play, which is based on the ancient greek myth of the same name, features a young man, haemon, who is in love with his stepmother. the play is an important reflection of the ancient greeks’ attitude towards the gods. the ancient greeks believed in the existence of one universal religion, which was based on the cult of the gods. the gods were seen as the source of justice, good fortune, and prosperity, while humans were in charge of order, morality, and justice. although the gods were benevolent towards humans and their society, they were not seen as in charge of the world in its entirety, rather than only of the gods’ domain. the gods’ domain was limited to a small area within a land where they were worshipped. therefore, the fact that the gods were absent from one part of the world had no impact on human society as a whole. in the play, though, the gods do become involved in human society. they take it upon themselves to punish haemon for his infidelity to his stepmother and to the gods. woodruff’s translation is the first complete english translation of the play.

in his preface, woodruff acknowledges the great debt that he owes to the translation by ronald george of the earlier english edition of antigone published by oxford university press in 1958 and to the translation of the play by a. e. astin in the loeb classical library. as woodruff notes, the translation of antigone by astin is the most complete available. astin was a prominent scholar in his day, and his work was based on a thorough and careful study of the greek text. woodruff provides new translations for lines that are not in the astin edition and that are found in the greek text of the play. woodruff also contributes the first english translation of the entire text of the play, a translation that is the definitive version. the play is one of the three tragic plays of sophocles, the other two being oedipus the king and oedipus at colonus. the play deals with the tragic death of oedipus at colonus. oedipus, who has blinded himself, commits suicide in response to the curses of his children. these curses come from a prophecy in which oedipus is warned that his daughter antigone will be the cause of his death. she will bury him, and as a result, she will die herself, her husband, creon, having to become the ruler of thebes. the play is very complex, and woodruff provides many helpful notes.

this book is a meditation on the historical and religious issues that pervade contemporary society. some, including the author, claim that the state of the world is falling apart, with the world being torn apart by war, economic stress, ethnic strife, terrorism, and environmental degradation. others, including the author, maintain that the state of the world is deteriorating, as increasingly the entire planet has become a world of self-destructive individuals–what plato called the “mob of idlers” or “the many”. while this book is not a polemic, it does not shy away from the issues of war and peace, of poverty and wealth, of religious belief and non-belief. it does not seek to right ancient wrongs or to provide a quick-fix for the ills of society. it simply seeks to describe and examine with care the human condition. whether you agree with the author or not, i hope you will appreciate the work for its own sake. the work is divided into two sections. the first section, “society,” looks at the basic political and economic structures that hold modern society together, even as they slowly dissolve. the second section, “the individual,” examines the personal, ethical, and spiritual issues that are central to how we understand the human condition. both sections begin with the question, “what is society?” the first section examines society through two distinct paradigms: the agrarian society, which is based on the expectation of a return from nature, and the industrial society, which is based on the exchange of goods and services. the second section explores society through the themes of religion, philosophy, science, and the arts. this work is a culmination of more than thirty years of research and study into the depths of these themes and their relationship to the major social and ethical issues of our time.
