one thing i noticed immediately with the blu-ray edition of the ring is how many extra features there are for it. besides the extended edit, deleted scenes, and commentary, the two-disc set includes a new documentary called the memories of samara, which offers the first look at some of the nightmares that were reported after the movie was finished. its kind of an insightful and chilling look at the reception the movie received, because although theres all kinds of movie things to be thrilled about (the performances, the special effects, the friggin aliens in them!), the humans deal with the horror of the film in very dark ways; the ending is a real doozy. producers frank marshall and kathleen kennedy came on for the blu-ray edition to give it a production update, and it turns out the kind of video technology used with the ring was the norm for the era. i was astonished to learn they sent a crateful of raw footage to poland for just one scene, where the film was shot, with a four-color videotape. and the pic was color-corrected later, using a digital system for koppel computer. oh my god, even just reading about it blows me away.
