Immediately I got to thinking about how we were almost at our basecamp and I realized what was likely going to happen. I had yet to explore the ways one could die in the Himalayas. So I began to read On the Trail. I paused when I came to the point about exposure. Being caught in a storm if its windy (lets go with 36 to 37 mph winds) is one of the most dangerous things one can do. If its cold, its even more dangerous. And if it is both? Its a real recipe for disaster. I also read how certain animals (like bears) can carry off healthy people in a matter of seconds. I hadnt read it but I had heard it. This wasnt just a tale out of the P.D. James collection, it was real.

Didnt find it. Had I arrived at the checkpoint early? No idea. Later that afternoon, we hiked out to the most popular viewpoint, and there, sitting next to a flagstone wall that overlooked a small temple and a river valley, I found the marker we had been looking for, with a little wooden sign, Dead End, pointing to a trail that descends in a slightly more dangerous route the two we had taken. A quick, two-hour hike, came the trailhead, where we had a beer and a laugh. And where I learned that there is quite a difference between trail marker and signpost.

Before we could catch a bus back to Lukla, two of our Sherpas warned us of the upcoming storm. Our teammates warned us about the storm. But we were all too drunk and tired to be concerned about the storm. Sure enough, they were all right. But that was not enough to persuade us to turn around and go back. Instead we crossed the bridge, negotiated the gate, and continued on our journey. We were tired, and even a bit drunk. But we had fought the elements and won. We were ready to face whatever would happen next.

It was not until at least the next day when the pain subsided, when I went to sleep, that I started feeling good again. It was not until then that I started to adjust.
I decided that I was not going to miss out on any of this trip. Besides, I still had to get in shape and be strong for my upcoming medical school finals. So I drove over to the gym and spent an hour lifting, running, doing lunges, sit-ups, and doing a good old fashioned sweat.
That night, I had a thick gooey dream that while I was feeling good about my future, the mountain was feeling good about me. But I woke up thinking that nothing could be that easy. That, that mountain was still really high. It was going to take time. And I was still going to work out.
