i’m normally the last person to cry about a pc game being a little buggy. i can’t stand the thought of seeing a bug in a game i paid money for. however, the delta force black hawk down team sabre game is a buggy mess. at the same time, it still has some good things going for it. for instance, the game has good ai, and it’s pretty easy to capture vehicles. in fact, if you’re the player who captures the enemy vehicle first, you can be notified of this fact if you have a lot of captures. i think this has more to do with the design of the game than with its actual performance, though. in the main missions, the enemy ai is kind of like a dog chasing a car with a stick. you have to be incredibly fast and accurate with your weapon of choice. other times, however, the ai is more like a cross between an idiot and a genius. it’ll be like a suicide truck is chasing you and you’re trying to get away from it, but you’re being chased by a suicidal soldier with a rocket launcher. while all of the various ai behaviors are a little unpredictable, the ai actually responds fairly well to different situations. there are some bad situations, like when the ai will insist on running into a building instead of running through it or will keep running around in circles even though the player has already captured the enemy vehicle.
though it offers no new game modes, delta force: black hawk down team sabre adds plenty of new weapons, vehicles, and new enemies. if you’ve played the original delta force: black hawk down, you already know that the whole experience is made better by multiplayer. the expansion adds five new multiplayer maps, all of which are drawn from the single-player campaign. delta force: black hawk down is a complete package that brings back the bhd experience with a whole new team. the only real downside is that it doesn’t have any new game modes. the campaign is so well done that players will probably want to go back and play it again. in the end, delta force: black hawk down team sabre might be more fun than team sabre, but the delay is too great.

in its classic incarnation, the game is a bit of a juggernaut. it’s a first-person shooter where you, as the leader of a delta force assault team, conduct raids on a small village in columbia or a large iranian military base. it’s a game of cover and close-quarters combat, and of carefully planned combat maneuvers. it’s not just a game of shooting things either; the game’s emphasis on tactical planning and the role of leader makes it more than just a game of shooting things. but for me, the original game never felt as if it had much of an identity. while it was not a bad game, it was so similar to doom that it just sort of blended into a sea of games and didn’t really stand out.
