the most recent entry in bollywood’s highly successful “feel good” series, wanted is actually a pretty good film. it stars akshay kumar as a man who lives his life in a way that would make everybody around him happy. on the surface, this seems like a pretty boring premise, but the film turns it into a rousing adventure movie that is really enjoyable. the concept is pretty simple. akshay is a criminal who wants to prove his innocence, and so he agrees to a kidnapping. he ends up on a train where he and his kidnappers find themselves in the middle of a serial-killer kidnapping spree. they have to fight their way through the train while also figuring out how to save the kidnappers lives. but theres a problem: everybody on the train is either an innocent or a bad guy. in fact, theres really only three kinds of people in the world, and akshay and his kidnappers are one of them. the premise is silly, but the movie doesn’t take itself too seriously, so it’s got that going for it. the action sequences are actually pretty solid, and while it may not be the best bollywood movie this year, it is one of the best indian films in recent memory. graham techler
though it has a fairly simple premise, hum hain rahi pyar ke is one of the best bollywood films ive ever seen. why? for a few reasons: its writers are shockingly good at writing, the film is set against a backdrop of an indian political crisis, and it tells a fairly deep story in the course of only three hours. in fact, the movie might be the closest thing to one of those manmohan desai masterpieces that we’ll see in a while, but it’s a little different. instead of a bunch of good people who happen to be in an unfortunate situation, we get a bunch of people who are in a fairly unfortunate situation.
But it is no longer about a boycott of the Hindi film industry. Today, even if you have refused to see movies from the industry, you are still watching these movies. In fact, you like watching it. I do get regular mail on regular basis asking me to watch Hindi movies. Its a gradual process. The Hindi film industry is not a monolith.
Content is the mantra, content is the message. We have to wake up and understand that. In fact, yesterday at the book launch, Zoya Akhtar said that shes not promoting this book (the book was launched by the writers) for box office. She only wanted to promote the book. She is also right. The box office only serves as a base camp and not as a destination. The destination is the movie hall. We must respect the movie hall first.
Hollywood has taken away the Oscars for the best movie. In the event of any other Oscar category, the future world could look at that platform to find out which country is the biggest imitator of other countries. But for Indian films to get an Oscar, its the end of our Bollywood.
The film goes out with a final image of a young Native American man, who was supposed to be played by an American Indian actor, dancing in a Native American-themed club named after the worlds largest diamond.He dances alone, center stage. No one else in the audience either dances or claps as heis thrust to the center of the stage. Such are the differences between what the club is named after, its dark side, and who the movie is about. They aren’t quite compatible.
