synthesis of the research and interpretation of data led to the development of three main themes. first, there was a theme of male and female experiences of menstruation in the context of relations between individual women, social structures, and religious ideas. these are discussed below. second, there was a theme of the role of family members in enforcing/enabling or disenabling expectations of women and girls regarding menstruation. third, there was a theme of the role of the healthcare system in the provision of menstrual care. each theme is discussed in turn in the sections that follow.
the experience of menstruation is one of living in the liminal space between being a woman and a girl. accordingly, research that focuses on the experience of menstruation often cannot avoid being coloured by a set of issues that relate to one s position in a wider social and gendered structure. this is particularly the case when one is trying to understand the nature of menarche and its social experience.
