the first thing i noticed about the blu-ray of ‘shrek the third’ is the picture. almost all of the animation is in black and white, and the palette is one of the most pleasing i’ve ever seen. i was a little worried when i learned that this would be a pg-13 movie, but i needn’t have worried. in fact, the addition of a decent color palette only enhances this movie. the ogre skin is a striking shade of green that brings a great deal of class to the series. the colors are bright without being garish, and the blacks are rich without being over-processed. the image is also free of crushing contrast, with well-modulated blacks and whites. the color palette is very pleasing to the eye, and the image is as lively as can be.
shrek’s villainous enemies aren’t the only bright spots. the animation itself is fantastic. shrek is one of the most cartoony and lovable characters ever created, and that’s what makes him such an appealing character. the animation is a notch above the standard for this series, and i never felt like i was watching a typical disney movie. the characters seem alive and interactive, and they move with a fluidity that belies the fact that they’re only 2d characters. the subtle facial expressions and graceful body movements are a delight to behold. shrek and his friends are just as agile, though they often look a bit stiff and awkward, which is probably the result of the fact that most of them are computer-generated and not hand-drawn. but it’s not just the characters that are animated well. the background characters are also very well done, and the action scenes were as fluid and fun to watch as i’ve ever seen. it’s not often that a movie that’s only meant for children is so enjoyable, but that’s what makes this movie so special.
the missing ingredient in the ‘shrek’ films is a real sense of humor. as a result, the movies lack the personality of their source material, which is a problem because these are aimed at kids. the film does add a few new species to the fantasy world, but these are so confusingly designed that they distract from the story. and the story is confused itself, never getting a real center. the animation itself is shaky and it seems that the producers were going for a computer-generated look, but it looks fake. the kid-friendly music by the soundtrack is one of the film’s most refreshing things, even though it may be nothing more than a homage to the original. i’m still not too sure how it will play in the u.s. for kids, but i’m told it’s a bit too frightening for the general audience. i’m not sure the film will play that well with the general public, but it may help kids have a good time, which is the main thing.
the long wait for the sequel to the first film is over. ‘shrek 2’ is a deliriously funny, really fun movie, and it’s a great dose of pure adrenaline. ‘shrek 2’ is even better than ‘shrek,’ because it introduces a whole new element into the film, which was missing in the original. it feels more like a full length movie, and it’s a lot more fun.
the sound is also great. my headphones were damaged so i could only test the audio from the video, and i think this is the best audio i have ever heard from this format. i was amazed by the audio from this blu-ray. the dts-hd master audio 7.1 track is fantastic. i’m surprised, because i didn’t think it was possible to improve the audio from the dvd. i’m surprised and impressed.
