The Radeon Pro Duo, which was the most powerful Radeon in existence at the time, needed a memory management unit (MMU) to provide additional protections from errors on memory. Though the Mac Pro used an Intel CPU, it didn’t have an MMU, thus, rendering the chips inside the computer useless. Many proprietary Macs from the mid-1990s, like the PowerBook and Studio, didn’t use an MMU either. The Miro Ferrari cards had a GPU that didn’t need an MMU, but the Radeon Pro Duo had a limited 512MB framebuffer available, so a change to the Radeon’s shader architecture was needed to accomodate. An attempt to introduce a version of OpenGL on the Mac Pro 1,1 was abandoned in 1999, so instead Apple chose a lower-powered rendering API that would be compatible with existing code. The drivers for both the Mac Pro 1,1 and Mac Pro 1,1/5,1s require an updated driver to render OpenCL, not OpenGL.
