from its opening line, the translation, as we have seen, omits marques’s statement that the title of the play refers to a specific cart of color. pilditch also fails to translate a central term in the scene: the word mierda, which marques uses to describe the killing victim and is translated by pilditch as “bastard” (1969, 147).
beyond this translation’s omissions and distortions, one of the play’s many contributions to afro-latina literature is its centralizing of racial and ethnic identity, a crucial moment in the construction of the “new york afro-latin@” (2005, 107). by foregrounding the afro-latino experience, marques’s play is the first of the “first wave of black puerto rican literature” (2005, 107). marques’s play, and the new york afro-latin@ literary tradition that it inaugurated, are the primary resources for the development of a large body of afro-latina literature in the 1970s and ’80s. in the decades since its publication, marques’s play has served as a blueprint for afro-latinx writers, as a touchstone for the articulation of the afro-latina experience in the united states. in the introduction to the book documenting the first wave of afro-latin@ literature, louis gutierrez names marques’s play as the “major work of afro-puerto rican literature” (gutierrez and borras 1982, vii).
