The enemies in the game are roughly balanced. There’s a heck of a lot of them, but you generally have more than enough time to take them out before they do any damage to you. New York is full of cool locations you can swing around and wreck, and most of them are marked in a state of underwhelming disrepair. The one exception is the Statue of Liberty, which is a magnificent sight. The combat is tough, but if you use a gamepad to control Spider-Man, things go a lot easier. The grappling mechanic is the best part about the game, but the oversize number of enemies mean it’s not always easy to come by. There aren’t many rooms in the game that are worth exploring for the sake of exploring, and while the game has plenty of sidequests and collectibles to keep you busy, it rarely rewards you for spending your time doing them.
There are a lot of stealthy gameplay sections. Stealth also plays a large part in various levels, including a rousing prison escape. Stealth makes a return to Spider-Man 2, but it’s usually a lot more boring here than the first game. The level design is generally bland and uninspired, with a lot of hallways and a lot of dead ends. Combat isn’t too fun either, though it does have a few neat sections and characters. There aren’t any boss fights in the game, and the challenges you face are generally uninspired and dull. Overall, this is Spider-Man 2 reimagined as a third-person action-adventure, and it does the job very well. In fact, it does it so well that you’ll probably want to avoid seeing the film at all.
Who is the half-bodied spider-hero? He’s better than the average street thug, that’s who. Spider-Man has been around for quite a while, and there are several different versions of the character. Spider-Man appears to be the primary hero of the story, but Spider-Man 2 had the classic “Peter Parker is the hero, and Peter is the normal person” vibe. Spider-Man 3 adopts the main character being a hero thing. The story is a little different than the previous ones, but it’s fairly standard superhero stuff. Spidey also gains a couple of new superpowers in the form of a spider-sense and web-swinging ability. These new abilities are a breath of fresh air in an otherwise fairly stale world. The remainder of the game takes place in a big city where Peter is the hero, and it’s his adventures that see him get the most dramatic improvement of the series. The best aspects of the story involve being a hero and saving the city. It’s quite a fun experience, although the situations are rather contrived.
