all in all, i felt that the ax-3 and rx versions were significant upgrades from the previous versions. the only downside is that the settings menus are a little bit intimidating at first. using the keyboard shortcuts makes much more sense, and still gives the ability to quickly access the features you need. the ability to quickly switch to one units presets from another is one of the coolest things about it, as is the ability to switch out the normal noise reduction settings for the customized ones that you have created. you can also save presets and automate the process of switching them on and off using the included script. the script is easy to use and once you get the hang of it, it can do amazing things.
the entire izotope rx series has always been about fine-tuning your own audio. its not a quick fix or instantly obvious if something is wrong with your audio. so if you arent confident with your mix, be cautious, because its easy to get in over your head. there are tons of presets built in, some of which are quite good, and some that are just a waste of time. you can choose to always use something, or only use it on certain audio types, or only for certain instruments. the worst cases end up being something that was unnecessary in your mix that ended up getting your whole mix ruined. it feels like one can overuse the tools in the rx series pretty easily.
without realizing it, he had been going over the audio piece by piece as he was working on the mix. in essence, there are no controls you can find to simply match one sound to another. any level of matching and you will end up with hiss. there are no controls to edit the pitch of a sound, or to specify transients or mics. even though the spectrogram lets you see what you are hearing, its quite difficult to quickly get a usable image of that audio. but with a little patience and a few tweaks of the settings, i was able to create a new noise reduction profile for my units that was better than what was built-in. this was done with only one preview of the unit and ended up saving me 30 seconds of session prep time.
