at the same time, i still find the movie striking, in its refusal to take itself seriously, and its adamant insistence that it is an exercise in pure expression. these qualities, mixed together, are what make a movie worth watching. i know that the film is bad, but i still find it so damn compelling that i spent most of the time trying to figure out how this was going to work in an attempt to see what it was trying to say.
there are two points where its failure becomes obvious. one is that, at the beginning of the movie, the hero is introduced to us as a man who has never seen a woman before. his first view of a woman is through a peep hole in a fence, and when he finally meets a woman, he has a sort of abstract reaction to her based on her clothing. it is a grim and depressing depiction of the reality of the world in which we live. the second is that the whole idea of a woman falling for a man who doesnt know anything about her seems to be ridiculous. the hero is portrayed as a complete charlatan, and the heroines love interest is no more credible than the idea that the hero would suddenly have an epiphany about life and go out into the woods to find a spiritual connection. there is no way to reconcile the ideas of both films in one, and thats what makes the movie so hopelessly confused. its a testament to the filmmakers abilities that they manage to make these conflicting ideas seem genuine, and to make it so, that they end up making a movie that seems like an expression of the ideas, rather than an effort to settle any kind of argument.
when angelina jolie was growing up, she was intensely interested in physics. from a very early age, she considered becoming an astronaut, and after watching a documentary on the subject, decided that the only way she would be able to do it was to be a stunt double. although her desire to be a stunt double has never been satisfied, she has made a career of it, playing stunt doubles in movies like the latest tomb raider, and is an expert at it. jolie has described stunt doubles as people who never get the credit they deserve, and that is certainly true, but jolie has gained recognition for her work in the field, and has become a pretty good actress as well. in the movie salt, jolie plays evelyn salt, a cia agent who is tortured in north korea on suspicion of being an american spy. jolie does a very good job of impersonating a high-ranking cia agent, and the character is compelling, if somewhat frustrating.
