in 2016, playstation vita and ps4 released driveclub vr, a highly-acclaimed virtual reality racing game that was developed by driveclub’s original developer, evolution studios. the game was very well-received and it received a positive response from the gaming community. in addition, driveclub vr received a huge update in march 2017 that included a new “pro driver” mode, which allowed players to compete in a championship and play through the game’s career mode as a pro driver. the update also added the “seasonal events” dlc, which added ten new events to play through.
so, how did driveclub manage to be a decent game despite its many problems? if you simply throw the blame on sony for the poor launch of the game, then youre missing the point entirely. driveclub developers evolution studios knew that they had a critical problem with the game right out of the gate. from the start of development, they had this problem in mind: “we knew we had some work to do to fix this. we knew we had a lot to do, so we just had to tell ourselves that we were going to take it one step at a time.” they knew that they had some issues with how they were handling the speed of the cars, the type of visuals that they were providing, how the game was designed and so on. they knew the game needed many things fixed before they could make a new game out of it. the game actually had a very clear roadmap and a clear set of goals that had to be accomplished before they could move forward.
in a lot of ways, driveclub was like forza horizon. it was a fairly unique racing experience but it had many problems like the lack of a monthly subscription fee or other means of monetization, and the fact that it was never going to be a cash cow for the company. its publisher, sony, chose to abandon a lot of the lessons of the last generation of racing games and play a very different role in the driveclub product: they couldnt afford to take a risk with the game like they could in the previous generation of games, so they chose to manage it. their management, however, is not a subtle management, they are very hands-on, not only during the development of the game, but also during the post-release support of the game, and also during the marketing. there is a reason why they didnt release the game in december; it would have been too risky for them.
