The film’s rating within the industry was mixed. While the film’s release coincided with the intensively publicised campaign for the Dogani Bill, it was criticized for its lack of investigative accuracy, and its depiction of the victims, who were reported to have been manipulated and used as tools by the chief prosecutor. The final verdict caused the film’s distributor, CJ, to pull the film from its theaters, and many large Korean studios also dropped their ongoing projects with Choi. The film was eventually removed from YouTube on January 21, 2012, following protests against the efficacy of Internet censorship in the country.[7]
Although the scenario had been depicted in the novel 37 days before the film’s release in September 2011, the Korean Film Council had denied the film’s producers the necessary approval to use the title, pangsong. The council explained that the word could be dangerous for local audiences.
A Revised version of the film was broadcast in January 2012. The revised version contains the scenes added in the novel and the changes made in the courtroom. A trailer was released on January 25, 2012. The film’s title has been changed from The Chaser to Traces of My Heart.
The film was subsequently released in Korea in November 2014, and again in the US and the UK a year later. It won the 2014 Seoul Independent Film Festival Audience Award for Best Feature Film, and was awarded the Honorable Mention Award at the Glasgow Film Festival in Scotland. The film was released in Japan in early 2016.
