Update from macOS Sierra to macOS High Sierra was no different, releasing a 12 gigabytes update. The installer was still stuck in 15% when I tried to download the update to my MacBook Pro (2016). Wile doing some more research, I came across a solution that would help me get the download going again.
I can’t stress enough how important it is for you to have an up-to-date system. In fact, it is the most nerve-racking thing ever! The large macOS High Sierra update released last year, for instance, required more than 25 gigabytes of storage space. At one point, I was stuck at 100% even after deleted at least 5 times!
While installing macOS High Sierra, I tried to cancel the download to save bandwidth. But, I couldn’t find the cancel button anywhere! This confused me because, I had done the same thing before—installing macOS Sierra. After some more research, I found out that there is a way to select cancel even though the download is not working.
I used an old trick on macOS Sierra download to save bandwidth. Once the download was stuck, I went to the Finder and tried to save a small picture (1024×1024). I had to press ctrl-H instead of the usual ctrl-S to do so. Then, I downloaded the picture to my desktop and reopened it using the Photoshop software. I told the software to open only the picture and not the original file which it usually does when opening a saved picture.
After opening the picture, I was able to see the download and click the cancel button. Again, I saved the picture on my desktop. I then Move that picture back to the original location with the Explore tool in Finder. This way, I saved one extra gigabyte of storage space. It was effective!
