In our study, housing status was assessed at the time of the index arrest and a large proportion of the infants born homeless were already in their current housing situation at the time of the study. These findings are not surprising and this population appears to be coping differently than those in shelter populations.
In our study, infants who lived in a household where at least one parent had a diagnosed developmental or learning disability were more likely to be homeless, but not more likely to be in safety. However, our sample size was small, and this relationship should be explored further. In an older study, housing status was not related to developmental disabilities in the child \[[@CR14]\]. In that study the developmental screening took place after the traumatic event and was therefore not an acute measure of developmental ability. This difference is not surprising, but reinforces that this population is different than a shelter population.
Importantly, this study had a number of limitations. This is a cross-sectional study and consequently, temporality cannot be determined. Similarly, while we identified a significant difference in the proportion of homeless infants on the basis of caregiver report, we did not compare our findings to objective data. We do not know the representativeness of our sample, and therefore findings may not be generalizable.
Because we sought to identify correlates of homelessness using only caregiver report, there was a chance of social desirability bias. We mitigated this by utilizing a confidential and anonymous data collection method that included only caregivers who volunteered to participate. In addition, our study population was comprised of a convenience sample of infants who were in the ED or transfer service during the study period. This means that the findings may be different if all infants living in shelters were recruited.
A much larger study with a longitudinal component is needed to understand how to best achieve permanency for this population. In addition, research to explore the relationship between developmental disabilities and homelessness is needed to help reduce this population of vulnerable infants and children.

In summary, our study is the first to characterize the homeless pre-school age population in BC. It is clear that this population is distinct from a shelter population, as it is more likely to have no parent living in the home and to have a diagnosis of a developmental disability
