Layers
Layers are your starting point for creating images in Photoshop. The _layer window_ is a window on the left side of the workspace. The layers at the top of the layer window show the layers you’ve created, whereas the bottom layers are the hidden layers that are not visible when you view the document in Photoshop. You can create new layers (see the upcoming “Creating and Using Layers” section) or access the ones you’ve created from the Layers panel (see Figure 1-1).

You can add color or black-and-white (grayscale) layers. Each layer also has options for creating masks. In Chapter 9, I go into great detail about using masks, but for now, just know that by combining two or more layers together, you can create a new layer mask, also known as a selection mask, on one of the layers. The masks change the way the selected layer looks.

I will work from scratch but save the layer styles for later use. I will be using a white background for this tutorial, but you can change this to the photo of your choice.
Step 1: Apply a New Layer
The first thing you will need to do is add a new layer. The layer you will edit can be selected by right-clicking in the layers palette, then click on New Layer from the palette. The New Layer button looks like a pencil.
This was the first step of the tutorial, but if your layer is visible in Photoshop Elements, you will need to go to the Layer Properties panel and set the mode to Overlay.
Step 2: Reduce Noise
The next thing to do is reduce the noise from the image. This is a subtle and key step. If you look closely, you will notice lots of tiny dots which make up the image. You are going to remove some of these dots. Do this by using the filter Mask.
Apply Filter > Enhance > Mask
A mask is like a stencil that limits what will be added to the image. In this case, we want to keep the edges of the photo, but we only want to add the grid to the image.
If you click in the mask it will appear on your photo as a white and black checkerboard pattern.
Step 3: Add a New Layer
Now you will need to add a new layer to the photo. Click on the Add Layer button, which looks like a plus (+) symbol. We are going to use this to hold the pattern we just added.
Go to Layer > New > Layer Via Copy. This is a shortcut for going to the Layer menu, clicking on the New Layer button and then pressing OK. The new layer is now on top of the original photo.
Step 4: Change the Mode of the Layer
The next thing we need to do is change the mode of the layer. To do this click on the Layer > Layer Property > Mode. This is the default mode of the layer.
You need to change this to Overlay. When you set the mode to something other than its default, you will no longer be able to edit the layer, only add

The Supreme Court today suspended a controversial section of Aadhaar Act, saying it violates privacy of subscribers by linking personal data with their biometric information.
“Even if the Act was meant to collect an occasional information for statistical purposes, its overriding object is not’statistical’ (social welfare). There is no place for a concession to the discretionary powers of the State in a matter that touches the life and liberty of the individual,” a Bench of Justices Dipak Misra and AM Khanwilkar said.
It said privacy of the subscribers was “virtually unreviewable” and the objective of the Act is to provide direct benefits.
The judges said anonymity of Aadhaar number was critical for purpose of personal welfare.
They also said no court in India had directly held on an occasion a particular section to be ultra vires and so violation of privacy.
The apex court said even if the section was to collect an occasional information for statistical purposes, the aim of it was not “statistical” (social welfare).
“Any relaxation in respect of the said section must be embedded in a sincere purpose to serve the interest of the individual concerned,” the Supreme Court said.
It said the section transgresses privacy because the respondents’ identity and the fact that he was an Aadhaar number holder were disclosed.
Section 7 of Aadhaar Act reads: “No person (whether individual or otherwise) shall have any right to any records maintained in connection with Aadhaar number or identity information.”
Sections 11A(1) (a) (i), 11A(1) (d) read as: “(i) To enable an agency to verify the identity of a person to whom any benefit is to be provided under this Act and (d) No person shall be given any record of a particular kind unless the purposes for which such a record is required to be maintained are specified therein.”
The court was hearing a bunch of petitions, seeking setting aside of section 7 of Aadhaar Act.
