The band had been together for around seven years, and yet the release of Let It Be in May 1970 was the first time in the trio’s history the members of the band had seen Harrison’s writing become the focus of the spotlight. Recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London, on January 26th-27th, 1970, Let It Be was released on May 12th that year and, despite the change in sound and the presence of the uncharacteristically tardy drummer, George Harrison songs were still the least successful on the album.
The group had won the first of their five Grammys in 1967, with Harrison getting the award for best new artist. As a solo musician, he would reach the top of the charts on three occasions, but never win the coveted prize for Album of the Year. Yet 1967s Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band was the artist’s first artistic triumph in a decade, and the previous year he had earned the respect of America’s rock community when he was handpicked to play alongside Dylan at the Newport Festival. It was a decision that would transform his career forever.
