This paper is concerned with the heat and mass transfer study of nanofluid flowing in a sinusoidal shaped tube. The flow field of nanofluid in a sinusoidal tube is established using a fully coupled numerical analysis of a steady-state governing equation system. The effect of volume fraction and asperity ratio of nanoparticles on the thermal and mass transfer characteristics has been analyzed. The numerical and experimental analysis has been done for both subcritical and supercritical cases. The results show that the effect of a variation in the volume fraction of the nanoparticles on the thermal and mass transfer is more prominent for the subcritical cases. The analysis also shows that the variation in asperity ratio has more influence on the heat and mass transfer for the supercritical cases. The influence of the non-Newtonian nature of the fluid is also analyzed.
The effects of thermal conductivity of the nanoparticles are studied numerically. This study is done numerically using the finite element approach for a set of eight theoretical cases. The governing equation system is then solved and in addition to the thermal diffusion equation, the convection-diffusion equation is also solved. The results show that the effect of the thermal conductivity of the nanoparticles on the heat transfer characteristics is more prominent for the fluid with lower thermal conductivity. This can be explained by the fact that for the low thermal conductivity, the convection term is negligible. The effect of the phase change heat transfer is also studied.
It is interesting to note that the second and third paper compared the concept of the inverse estimation technique in the literature where friction type coupling model is used [ 8 ]. The inverses are calculated and then the reduced friction parameters can be computed for each type of the model. The only difference is that in this case, the reduced friction coefficients are obtained for both the models and the standard friction model is compared with the inverse type of model. In this paper also, it is shown that the coupled model equations for the flow and heat transfer in the presence of a magnetic field can be simplified using reduced friction models.
