The memory provides for a very fast writing rate and, at the same time, allows a high storage density.

While the first use of the technology was in a magnetic random-access memory (MRAM), the Bologna/Stuttgart/Cambridge team took a different approach and developed a two-terminal spin-torque memory based on the current-controlled magnetization of a single ferromagnetic domain.

Magnetization reversal is achieved by means of a writing current pulse applied to the STT cell. Each cell requires only one transistor, the memory array uses just a single transistor per cell. The nonvolatile memory operates at temperatures below 400K and does not require any energy to switch from an erased state to a programmed state or vice versa. The spin-torque memory works with both electrons and holes and can provide retention times of more than 10 years and low write power.

This two-terminal spin-torque memory can be integrated with current-mode logic circuits to provide significant cost savings and low power consumption.

The spin-torque memory could be used for memory in cache memories for memory-intensive applications such as high-performance supercomputers or mobile devices that require a nonvolatile memory and are powered by battery
