the citation was the last of the three models in the citation family. the citation ii was in production from 1992 to 2003 with a total of 15,945 aircraft built. it was also the first completely new model to the citation line since the original. the citation ii was the first modern business jet with a glass cockpit. the use of three-color led backlit glass allowed the first fully integrated glass cockpit in an aircraft. the carenado citation ii cockpit is nearly identical to the real aircraft, with the exception of the backup lights, which do not illuminate on the s550. the carenado citation ii was the top selling business jet of all time with 1,000 more sold than the next closest competitor. the citation ii came with the industry’s most advanced navigation and communication systems and was equipped with the most powerful engines in the citation line.

the carenado citation ii s/ii is a solid performer in the virtual cockpit. the engine startup is normal and the inter-cockpit communication is quite strong. i used the virtual instrument range indicator (viri) and the radio altimeter (ralt) and found both working well. unlike other airplanes that i have flown in the past, the carenado s/ii flies true, which is to say it is not affected by the virtual cockpit technology. the aircraft responds to throttle commands with accuracy and timing and is also responsive to the throttle’s degree of movement.

the sp-200 was updated with a new display and a new flight director. the new sp-200 was never intended to take over the citation ii sp-500. the original sp-600 was well into it’s life and the sp-500 was an excellent autopilot for the citation ii. the sp-600 had been upgraded with the new sp-350 attitude controller and now the sp-600 was a replacement for the original sp-300. the sp-600 had been upgraded with a new glass cockpit and a new via-fms. the sp-200 was intended to replace the original sp-300. the sp-300 was a basic autopilot that flew the citation ii by doing the same thing the sp-500 did, but, with a smaller display and less memory. it was designed to be a cheaper autopilot for the first generation citation ii and the sp-200 took over the same flight envelope.
although the s550’s flight performance is very good, the aircraft is not without drawbacks. the most obvious is its finicky powerplant. the 2,200-lb-thrust pratt & whitney canada jt15d-1a turbofan is a scaled-down model of the engine used on the citation iii and was chosen because of the size and the low cost of the engine. the citations i and ii are powered by 2,200-lb-thrust pratt & whitney canada jt15d-1a turbofans. though the engines are scaled down, they are not of lower quality than the citation iii’s. they also have a higher idle setting that will start to ramp up after about 20 minutes of idling. after hours of running the engine will begin to run hot. the citations are also very thirsty for fuel. the mtow is 3,700 lbs. which the s550 can carry in 3,800 gallons of jp-8. the average range is around 1,500 nm at maximum cruise speed.
