unfortunately, the drivers do not support the parport interface on this hardware. i have not used an h-pdu ftdi chip yet, but this is what youll need to use if you want to communicate with the cpld via the parallel port.

ok, if you have a win7 machine, no problem. download the latest driver from the ftdi web site. install it. if you havent previously used ftdi cables, youll see a new menu item in the device manager called “ftdi usb composite device” which is the list of all ftdi cables, breakouts, etc you have attached to your computer. right click it and select “update driver”. wait for the device to be detected. when it is, you should see a new entry for the ftdi cable, and a “driver details” dialog. scroll down to “hardware ids” and youll see the device identifier. click the “ok” button to install the driver.
if youve used ftdi cables before, youll see “ftdi usb serial driver” and “ftdi usb serial device” entries. right click the device in the device manager, and select update driver. wait for the driver to be installed. youll see the “driver details” dialog, scroll down to “hardware ids” and youll see the device identifier. click the “ok” button to install the driver. you should see the driver being loaded to the device in the device manager.
There are some drawbacks that one can work around though. The total number of pins is 22 for this circuit. This means that in addition to the FTDI’s six pins, this device also needs a power switch and two JTAG pins. If you are running the FTDI on an RS-232 voltage rail, you need a 5 V power supply of 12 V or more. Fortunately the device provides a built in 3.3 V power supply, so theres no need to provide that.
There are 20 spare JTAG pins on the back of the FTDI chip. It is possible to connect them to the back of the FT2232 chip, as well as the JTAG interface on the FTDI. This Ive achieved by soldering each external pin to the FTDI’s JTAG pins with two 10k resistors and connecting JTAG to the FTDI.
Also of note: The FT2232 chip has a pullup resistor, and it is optional if you do not want that. However the FT2232 is a dual-ported device, and requires master/slave jtag, as with many devices using the JTAG interface. This means that the FT2232 needs the slave-only JTAG port in JTAG mode. And also, once JTAG is enabled, it needs to operate with the same resistance for the pins as the FTDI. None of the pins on the FTDI’s back, however are connected to ground. Fortunately for the FTDI this is not required, but should be accepted for the best results. The FTDI software has a “lowest level” mode that provides the best result for the FT2232. In this mode one can specify the resistance per pin. With the default setting, the FT2232 and FTDI are in sync for signal integrity and speed. If you can manage it, I highly recomend you try this mode first.
I’m planning to make a FPGA with a Cirrus CS10600, and I’m pretty much looking at using the ATag described in this guide, but the ATag I want to use has two different versions. I’m using the one that has a DIP38 connection, and according to the ATag datasheet I can use that with both JTAG and JTAGLPT, and I’ve gotten the datasheet to say the same about the version with a DIP32 (which is what I have). I don’t think I can just switch which version of the ATag I’m using though, since the programming software doesn’t seem to like that.
